Therapist Profile:

Laura L. Mette, L.C.S.W., B.C.D.

After finishing dual degrees in Sociology and Religious Studies in 1975 from Barat College, Laura Mette earned a Masters in Social Work from University of Michigan. There she had early clinical experiences in a child and family agency setting as well as in public adoption,  foster care and juvenile justice. It was at the University Michigan she became interested in family therapy culminating in her move to Atlanta to help launch the Atlanta Area Family Psychiatry Clinic in the spring of 1977.

For over thirty years Laura has nourished a diverse caseload -- working with children, adolescents and their families as well as couples and individual adults. Never far from her academic roots, she is interested and cognizant of the significant impact of culture and family on human behavior. It is precisely the broadness of her client population that best speaks to her interest in most facets of daily living. With many years of clinical knowledge, her style of therapy is very active, practical, interactive and collaborative with both her clients and consulting resources. With scientific advances in the area of the biology of brain chemistry, treating the issues of mental health continue to evolve significantly since the onset of her career.

Laura would advise that the “fit” of client to therapist is keenly important and, that when an option, should always be exercised. “ Life” continues to be her best teacher and feels the therapeutic relationship hinges upon being able to relate to that process with the many individuals and families with whom she has had the honor to work. Her favorite referrals come from previous clients and she enjoys enough tenure to be seeing some third generation legacies!

Laura is the proud mother of three adult children—her best ‘outcome’ to date.
