Physician Profile:

Yassar J. Kanawati, M.D.


Following the awarding of her medical degree, Dr. Kanawati trained in psychiatry for two years in Paris, France. She completed her training at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan in General Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Dr. Kanawati is Board Certified in General Psychiatry. 

Dr. Kanawati has been working with children, adolescents, adults and families at the Atlanta Area Family Psychiatry Clinic since 2002.  She serves as Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor and Clinical Advisor in the Department of Psychiatry at Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia.  She also works as a consultant to the Juvenile Justice Department in Fulton County. 

Prior to joining the Atlanta Area Family Psychiatry Clinic, Dr Kanawati served for several years as the Medical Director and Senior Manager at Devereux Treatment Center in Kennesaw, Georgia  where she provided administrative oversight and supervision, was on the Quality Improvement committee, and was the chairperson of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics committee. She provided medical/clinical treatment and developed new programs on the hospital campus and in the local community. 

Previously, Dr. Kanawati has also practiced at the Highland River Community Mental Health Center and at the Cobb/Douglas County Community Services Board providing outpatient treatment services for adults, adolescents and children.  Dr. Kanawati has worked with victims of torture from other countries through a special program with the Board of Health in Dekalb County.

Dr. Kanawati had also practiced at the Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville, North Carolina with inpatient and outpatient programs and as a consultation liaison psychiatrist for adults, adolescents and children.  While there, she was  a clinical professor at Methodist College in Fayetteville, North Carolina. 

Dr. Kanawati is a member of the American Medical Association, American Psychiatric Association, Georgia Psychiatric Physicians Association, American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and the American Association of Psychiatric Administrators.

Her special interests include mood disorders, anxiety disorders, post traumatic stress disorder, eating disorders and psychopharmacology. 

Dr. Kanawati is also fluent in French and Arabic.
